A title has a simple job: help the right buyer recognize the exact item. Start with facts that distinguish it, then remove words that spend space without adding useful information.
Use a simple title structure
Product type + brand or model + size or capacity + variant + pack quantity.
Not every product needs every part. Keep the attributes that help someone identify this item. eBay allows up to 80 characters; write a clear title within that space instead of padding it to reach the limit.
Put the useful words early, where they remain visible in a narrow results card. If compatibility is essential, name the model accurately. Do not borrow an unrelated brand to attract searches.
Replace filler with product facts
| Before | Clearer version |
|---|---|
| Amazing Lamp Best Quality WOW | Adjustable Metal Desk Lamp Blue E26 Socket |
| Water Bottle Large New | Stainless Steel Water Bottle 750 ml Screw Lid Black |
| Storage Baskets Pack | Woven Storage Baskets Set of 3 Natural Rectangular |
These are writing examples, not claims about an actual product. Only use “stainless steel,” a socket type or a capacity after checking it. A better-sounding title is not an improvement if it creates a wrong expectation.
Use the structured fields too
The title does not replace item specifics. Fill the relevant brand, model, type, color, dimensions and compatibility fields with verified information. Buyers use those fields to narrow a search.
Keep the title, specifics, photos and description consistent. If the title says three baskets, the quantity and product images should not imply a different set.
Use eBay’s listing guidance to check the available fields and category requirements.
Write for a quick read on a phone
Open with one sentence describing the item. Follow it with the measurements, material, condition and contents. Separate any defect or limitation so the buyer can find it easily.
- Replace a long block of supplier copy with short paragraphs.
- Remove repeated claims and unrelated product suggestions.
- Keep delivery and return promises consistent with the listing settings.
- Check AI-written text against the actual product record.
A useful description might read: “Blue adjustable desk lamp with an E26 socket. Metal shade and base. Bulb not included.” Every detail should be supported by the item being sold.
Keep the first photo clear
Show the actual product or an accurate image you have permission to use. Make the variant, quantity and condition easy to see. Include additional angles where they answer a real buyer question.
eBay’s picture policy restricts added text and marketing material. Keep promotional overlays out of listing images; put necessary product information in the appropriate listing fields.
Measure changes without guessing at the algorithm
Compare impressions, views and sales over a useful period. Change one meaningful element at a time where possible, and record what changed. A title edit alongside a price cut and an ad campaign does not tell you which change drove the result.
eBay’s Best Match guidance covers several listing and seller factors. No title formula guarantees a position. Prioritize accuracy and clarity, then use your own results to decide what to improve.
Before changing the price to increase clicks, check the resulting profit with the eBay price calculator.

Questions sellers ask
How long can an eBay title be?
Up to 80 characters. Use the space for relevant, accurate attributes rather than repeated keywords or filler.
Should I put free shipping in the title?
Shipping has dedicated listing settings. In most cases, the limited title space is more useful for product identity, model, size, variant or quantity.
Does a better title guarantee higher rankings?
No. Relevance, listing quality, price, shipping and seller factors all matter. Use accurate titles and measure your own results.
